Final results from Mauritania’s 2025–2026 living-conditions survey, presented on 2 November, put monetary poverty at 25.7% in 2025, down from 28.2% in 2019. Extreme poverty fell from 12.8% to 11.2%. These are changes over six years, rather than a measure of household conditions during the current month.
Multidimensional poverty—which captures overlapping disadvantages beyond income—fell from 58.7% to 54.7%, remaining considerably more widespread than monetary poverty. Households with an indoor water tap increased from 39.4% to 52.6%; health-insurance coverage rose from 6.4% to 11.9%.
The economy minister said the gains occurred despite cumulative consumer-price increases of 30.6%, including 42.6% for food. He credited household-support measures with cushioning the pressure on purchasing power.
