Mauritania's prime minister, Mokhtar Ould Djay, told the National Assembly on Saturday that the government will act to protect household purchasing power. These are commitments, not measures in force.
He said the government will revise how fuel prices are set, with the state bearing part of the cost. It will extend its existing price caps on wheat, rice, sugar and oil to meat. And it will temporarily pay part of the water and electricity bills of low-income households. He also promised pay and pension increases for civil servants and retirees.
Nouakchott Times's account of the speech gives no amounts, eligibility rules or start dates for the new measures.
