Community members told RFI that Kindo had been released but placed in isolation at a location described as a place of rest, intended to prevent crowds gathering outside his home. One person who said they had seen him described conditions resembling house arrest. His precise legal status and the duration of the restrictions remain unclear.
Kindo was arrested on 26 May 2026, after criticising a proposed law regulating religious freedoms and worship. His detention prompted a demonstration in Ouagadougou that security forces dispersed with tear gas, followed by arrests of supporters. Those supporters subsequently returned to their families, but the capital’s principal Sunni mosque remains closed.
