The cabinet approved the creation of the Société Nigérienne de Transport par Rails on 29 October. Its mandate is to manage railway traffic and provide safe, reliable services under the Alliance of Sahel States’ railway-development strategy. The company is structured as a mixed public-private enterprise.
The announcement gives no route, construction financing or service-start date. The immediate decision establishes an operator; an operating timetable remains unspecified.
Separately, ministers approved an amendment transferring technical oversight of Niger-Transit, or NITRA, to the finance minister and repealing transitional provisions in its nationalisation ordinance. NITRA was nationalised on 23 January 2026; the new decision changes its oversight arrangements rather than nationalising it again.
