The spill at the Agadem field began on 25 September. ActuNiger’s 28 October account, citing sources close to the emergency operation, says the well has stabilised, no deaths or injuries occurred, and much of the spilled oil and affected surface sand has been removed. Two neighbouring wells were also shut down as a precaution.
The government had previously described the incident as only partially contained and commissioned an independent investigation with Algerian technical assistance. The new operational account attributes the leak to damaged casing near the wellhead; the investigation’s findings on responsibility, the total volume spilled and the full cost of environmental damage remain outstanding.
