Mauritania’s national meteorological agency issued an alert on the evening of 23 October for sharply reduced visibility caused by airborne dust and sandstorms. Western regions and the coast were already affected; the agency expected the conditions to extend elsewhere before improving progressively on 27–28 October.

The warning identifies two distinct road hazards: poor visibility and shifting or accumulating sand dunes on major routes. The agency urged drivers to reduce speed and exercise particular caution. It also called on mariners and fishermen to follow subsequent bulletins.

People with asthma or other respiratory illnesses, children and older people were advised to limit exposure to dust. The alert covers an ongoing weather hazard, rather than a forecast confined to the coming week.
