The Council of the European Union approved the assistance measure on 29 October. It will finance additional land-surveillance assets intended to improve the Mauritanian armed forces’ awareness of activity across national territory, complementing equipment planned under a measure adopted in 2025.
This is the fourth bilateral package for Mauritania under the European Peace Facility, the EU mechanism that finances external military and defence assistance. Earlier packages support capabilities on land and at sea, including surveillance, deterrence and operations.
The Council identifies protection of Mauritania’s territory and civilian population, alongside stability in the Sahel, as the objectives. Its announcement does not specify the equipment models, quantities or delivery schedule, leaving the timing of the additional operational capacity unclear.
