President Abdelmadjid Tebboune decided on 26 October to send units of Algeria’s National People’s Army to Niger, according to a presidency communiqué carried by the official Algerian Press Service. The stated mission is protection of common Algerian–Nigerien energy and economic interests.

The decision follows Parliament’s authorisation on 25 October. That distinction matters operationally: the new development is the president’s decision to proceed, rather than another endorsement of the parliamentary vote. Neither announcement confirms that troops have already arrived in Niger.

The public statement leaves the force’s size, duration, rules of engagement and precise responsibilities undisclosed. Its immediate significance is a further step towards an Algerian military presence protecting cross-border economic interests, with the practical deployment arrangements still unresolved.
